Oil Pulling: A Healthy Mouth & More

Oil pulling is a practice that has been around for some time. It is a simple practice where you take 1-2 Tablespoons of oil, such as coconut oil, place them in your mouth first thing in the morning before eating or drinking, swish it around for approximately 10 minutes and spit it out. The practice itself is easy as long as you can entertain yourself for those 10 minutes while you’re swishing. The benefits gained from this simple task can be quite significant.

The first logical idea that crosses your mind is it must somehow be good for teeth and gums. You are correct. Oil pulling helps remove bacteria from your mouth, reduce inflammation, prevent and improve gum problems and help with plaque buildup. Coconut oil is composed of medium chain triglycerides. MCT, the abbreviation for medium chain triglycerides, is a term you are very likely familiar with. The MCT’s contain a component called lauric acid. The lauric acid interacts with the saliva in your mouth. The chemical reaction that occurs greatly reduces the ability of plaque to stick along with having a cleansing effect. Lauric acid also contains antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. The combination of these properties can help break up plaque, kill bacteria and improve your dental health.

Oil pulling with coconut oil is a simple process that can improve your health and your smile. Consider adding it to your morning routine and see what benefits show up. You might just end up with an extra sparkle in your smile.
